Grizzly bears and other nice things in Yellowstone

In spite of all the people making it feel a bit more 'theme park' than 'national park' - Yellowstone is a very beautiful place with a lot of wildlife.

Two days of Yellowstone:

3 grizzly bears! This one was about 100m away and nervous about the cars on the road. It ran off into the trees very quickly.

I did think of Yogi. He was a favourite of mine as a kid. The first movie I ever remember seeing was "Yogi Bear" and the ranger lady at the entry gate was wearing a rangers hat just like in the movie, but Yogi's cousins don't steal food any more. The humans have been trained very well to lock their food up and clean up after themselves and it is illegal feed any of the animals.

Wildflowers covering hillsides.

Herds of bison in wide open valleys, often right beside the road and generally doing a good job of ignoring the stares of tourists.

Sulphorous steam from geysers. Haven't seen the big ones yet. Planning to do that on our return trip through the park as we head north again.

Watching a thunderstorm roll across Yellowstone Lake. (The dead trees are from bushfires)

  1. Wonderful photos and stories Jillian- I'm truly amazed at the amount and variety of wildlife you have encountered. Shame about all the people in Yellowstone, I guess after such vast, unpopulated and spectacular scenery for so much of the trip it was a bit of a shock, but it's good to know that so many still value wild places.
