Our Swiss adventure began with a flight from Oslo to Zurich where we caught a train to Chur. True to the reputation of the Swizz railway, it was easy to catch, efficient and on time. We stayed overnight in the southern town of Chur, with enough time to wander the winding cobbled streets of the old psrt of the town.
An unexpected delight - the local horn club plays in the streets every Monday night. They arrived as we were finishing our dinner, sitting at outside tables of a restaurant.
At lunch time we boarded the Glacier Express for the five hour trip to Źermatt.
It lived up to its reputation as one of the most scenic train journeys of the world.
And also its reputation for fine food and service. Real cutlery, wine and table service. And this is second class.
Unfortunately, we had to leave the Glacier Express before Zermatt as part of the track is being repaired due to damage from floods in June. We were herded onto buses at Brigg and driven for 20 minutes to Tasch where we piled onto a local train to be shuttled to Zermatt. The views from the bus were still impressive.
We arrived in Zermatt late in the afternoon. We have a very nice mid-price range, two bedroom apartment for two weeks.
Amazing view of the Matterhorn and Zermatt from our balcony.
We are on the fifth floor, at the end of the left hand side. Lucky for us, there is a lift.
But we do have to earn the view. A decent uphill walk plus 87 steps, each time. No vehicle access.
There are bikes parked every where all over the town. No private vehicles are allowed. There are small electric work vehicles and taxis.
And two of the flash hotels send horse-drawn carriages to meet guests st the train station.
But - those views!! From our balcony!
