Puffins

Is there anything cuter than a puffin zooming overhead like a mini bomber plane, landing awkwardly and waddling full-pelt like a clockwork toy and diving head first into its burrow?

A day off from walking. We took a boat to Skomer Island and walked a 6.5 km circuit.

Skomer Island is a bird reserve. Like most visitors, we came for the puffins.
Over 50,000 puffins nest on the island.
They get up close, on their way to and from their burrows with beaks full of sand eels for their pufflings.
There are other birds on Skomer Island too. Lots of gulls including herring and black-backed gulls and kittiwakes.  There are short-eared owls and manx shearwaters which we did not see. But we did see guillemots and razor bills.
And choughs.
And Tonto, the herring gull who likes to ride the boat. You can find him on facebook. True. He is quite the character.
But the puffins are the stars of Skomer Island.

  1. Very jealous they got so close to you. They are super cute and who doesn’t recall the little orange puffin books as their namesake.
