The Last Castle

Apart from being constructed in the 1930s, I am not sure why Castle Drogo is called ' the last castle in the UK', but visiting it was a rather strange MONA-ish experience.
As it is undergoing major restoration to fix the roof and 913 windows which have always leaked, none of its furniture is set up. The National Trust have been very clever with art installations every where.

The First Drip

These two rooms reminded me of some of the installations at the Queenstown Festival back home.

The building itself really is a castle, built and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1930,  for Julius Drewe who made a lot of money from one of the first chain of retail stores.
The garden has formal and informal elements, and art works.

The castle sits at the edge of a gorge with magnificent views.
We went for a 3 hour walk down into the gorge...
Stopped for a drink at the pub at Fingle Bridge...
Then back along the Teign River...

And back UP to Castle Drogo.
