The Tale of the Woodpecker and the Squirrel

One day three friends went for a walk to a beautiful lake called Tarn Hows.
The lake and the land around it, as well as some farms nearby, were purchased by Beatrix Potter who gave them to the National Trust to look after so that people would be able to spend time enjoying nature.

The three friends came upon a bird feeder hanging from the branch of a tree. Many different finches and tits were flying around and landing on the feeder to eat the nuts in it.
Then a woodpecker, who was twice the size of the finches and tits, flew down and chased all the little birds away.
He ate and ate and ate. The little birds were frightened and watched him from the trees. They waited and waited.

After some time, a squirrel came along. He saw what the woodpecker was eating.
He decided he wanted some nuts too. He climbed up the tree branch.
The woodpecker saw the squirrel. He squawked at him, "No! No! Don't come down the wire! I do not want to share these nuts with you."
But the squirrel did not stop.
He came down the wire and chased the woodpecker away. Then the squirrel hung upside cown on the feeder, and ate and ate and ate.
The little birds became impatient. They were hungry and they had been waiting  long time. "Are you full yet? We want some nuts too!"
Eventually, the squirrel was full. He sat on a branch for a bit, cleaning his whiskers and then he scurried off into the forest.
The three friends decided it was time to go too. They walked home through the beautiful green forest. (Yes, I know you can only see two friends here. The third friend is taking the photos.)

  1. Thanks. It was quite special to be able watch the woodpecker and the squirrel for so long, and so closely. They were just 3 metres away.
